Iman is a witch, a subrace of humans with magical powers. Afraid that humans will discover them and -you know, torches and pitchforks- they hide away in mansions and set up special rules to avoid humans. So, Iman wants to go to college, learn about epidemiology. It’s much more about the learning than the going, because she seems to hate normal humans with a passion. Her first spell is one to keep them away from her, despite having one as a roommate. Do you see what’s coming next? Cause I do. Most handsome, popular guy in school takes a liking to her. In short order, she falls for him. And in hiding her relationship, she breaks every rule of magic. There are consequences for that sort of thing…

Let me be honest, I found Iman to be completely unlikable. She’s shallow and racist. Against humans, mind you. Not racial minorities. She’s also terribly illogical. She CHOOSES to live in a dorm with humans, despite hating them. I say she’s shallow, because she hates her roommate for being fat. None of these qualities are redeemed. The only human she is shown to be able to stand is her boyfriend. Reading her views infuriated me.

The writing style shows promise. You never really leave Iman’s perspective, and she thinks in run-on sentences. It’s a good experiment in writing as if you are in another person’s head, and still easy enough to read. Flowers definitely has the ability to write solid pieces of young adult fiction, and I think I would be just fine reading other works by her…

Just not Iman or her family, I don’t like them.
