First time John Marrs reader! I had heard so much about his books so I went into this feeling pretty excited. The book grabbed me from the start and I pretty much finished it in 2 days. It was really uncomfortable and horrifying.

The story is told in the present and the past, dropping little nuggets as to how the current situation takes place. What you think you know is true may be a matter of perception.

It was twisty and full of surprises. My only real complaint is that the ending wasn’t as thorough as I could have been, with the ending not as chilling or, alternatively, satisfying as I like in thrillers. It was almost a “wait…what?” moment that possibly should have been expounded on a little more. It doesn’t leave the reader confused, but more that it had more to travel, if that makes sense.

You can see my video review here:

Small Summary:

They say every house has its secrets, and the house that Maggie and Nina have shared for so long is no different. Except that these secrets are not buried in the past.

Every other night, Maggie and Nina have dinner together. When they are finished, Nina helps Maggie back to her room in the attic, and into the heavy chain that keeps her there. Because Maggie has done things to Nina that can’t ever be forgiven, and now she is paying the price.

But there are many things about the past that Nina doesn’t know, and Maggie is going to keep it that way—even if it kills her.
